By integrating WithSecure Elements with Sekoia.io, you can easily monitor and correlate alerts across all endpoints, ensuring maximum security for your business.

This setup guide shows how to forward events produced by WithSecures Elements to Sekoia.io.

  • Vendor: WithSecure
  • Supported environment: Cloud
  • Detection based on: Telemetry
  • Supported application or feature: File monitoring, Process monitoring

Configure

Create WithSecure Elements Credentials

In the WithSecure Elements Central Admin console:

  1. On the left panel, go to Management and select API clients.
  2. Click on Add new to create a new API client dedicated to Sekoia.io.
  3. Give it a description, check it is Read-Only and click on Add.
  4. In the API client Summary, copy the Client ID and the Secret before checking the box I have copied and stored the secret and closing the windows. They will be used later in Sekoia.io to retrieve the events.

Create the intake

  1. Go to the Intake page and create a new WithSecure Elements intake.
  2. Set the intake account with your API Client credentials Client ID/Secret
  3. After a couple of minutes check on the Events page that WithSecure Elements logs are being received.

Raw Events Samples

In this section, you will find examples of raw logs as generated natively by the source. These examples are provided to help integrators understand the data format before ingestion into Sekoia.io. It is crucial for setting up the correct parsing stages and ensuring that all relevant information is captured.

Detection section

The following section provides information for those who wish to learn more about the detection capabilities enabled by collecting this intake. It includes details about the built-in rule catalog, event categories, and ECS fields extracted from raw events. This is essential for users aiming to create custom detection rules, perform hunting activities, or pivot in the events page.

The following Sekoia.io built-in rules match the intake WithSecure Elements. This documentation is updated automatically and is based solely on the fields used by the intake which are checked against our rules. This means that some rules will be listed but might not be relevant with the intake.

SEKOIA.IO x WithSecure Elements on ATT&CK Navigator

CVE 2022-1292

The c_rehash script does not properly sanitise shell metacharacters to prevent command injection. This script is distributed by some operating systems in a manner where it is automatically executed. On such operating systems, an attacker could execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the script.

  • Effort: advanced
CVE-2017-11882 Microsoft Office Equation Editor Vulnerability

Detects the exploitation of CVE-2017-11882 vulnerability. The Microsoft Office Equation Editor has no reason to do a network request or drop an executable file. This requires a sysmon configuration with file and network events.

  • Effort: master
CVE-2021-34527 PrintNightmare Suspicious Actions From Spoolsv

Detects suspicious image loads and file creations from the spoolsv process which could be a sign of an attacker trying to exploit the PrintNightmare vulnerability, CVE-2021-34527. A remote code execution vulnerability exists when the Windows Print Spooler service improperly performs privileged file operations. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges. This works as well as a Local Privilege escalation vulnerability. To fully work the rule requires to log for Loaded DLLs and File Creations, which can be done respectively using the Sysmon's event IDs 7 and 11.

TOR Usage Generic Rule

Detects TOR usage globally, whether the IP is a destination or source. TOR is short for The Onion Router, and it gets its name from how it works. TOR intercepts the network traffic from one or more apps on user’s computer, usually the user web browser, and shuffles it through a number of randomly-chosen computers before passing it on to its destination. This disguises user location, and makes it harder for servers to pick him/her out on repeat visits, or to tie together separate visits to different sites, this making tracking and surveillance more difficult. Before a network packet starts its journey, user’s computer chooses a random list of relays and repeatedly encrypts the data in multiple layers, like an onion. Each relay knows only enough to strip off the outermost layer of encryption, before passing what’s left on to the next relay in the list.
